Seekers: the Novel

“What is that?” Simon narrowed his eyes, trying to make out the object at the water’s edge. It was probably nothing. Except… it glowed. Set in Cape Town, South Africa, Seekers of the Lost Boy is an adventure that brings a homeschooling family face to face with the atrocities of their apartheid past. It begins when 12-year-old Simon finds a bottle on the water’s edge during a visit to Muizenberg beach on a cold winter’s day. He brings the bottle home, dreaming of adventures, pirates and hidden treasures, only to have the bottle shatter within minutes of returning home. At first he is dismayed, but his disappointment is soon turned to intrigue when he discovers an envelope in the bottle. It contains a letter written 30 years prior by another 12-year-old school boy from the poverty-stricken Cape Flats. The letter is brief and contains one question: Who is God and does he care about me?

The letter fascinates the Ward family, so they embark on a journey of discovery. Through clues left in the letter, Simon, his mom and his twin 10-year-old siblings, Nic and Kim, find themselves revisiting their country’s apartheid past as they search for their mystery letter-writer.

This story is suitable for the entire family, with an age focus of 9 – 15 years.  The story explores South African history, particularly segregation history in the context of forced removals from District 6.

Seekers: the Unit Study (A4)

The Seekers Unit Study 1 | South Africa (A4) unit study accompanies the novel and explores many of the themes raised in the story.  If you are a teacher, parent or independent student keen to use Seekers of the Lost Boy as a springboard into all sorts of educational discoveries, then this unit study may just be what you need. While the study is aimed at students between the age range of 10 – 16 years old, the study also includes activities that will stretch the older student.  As an added bonus, homeschooling families get a full section dedicated to younger members of the family, with lots of activities and four colouring-in pages aimed especially at preschoolers and kids in grades 1 – 3.  The unit study focuses on five learning areas, and includes the following:

  • studies in language arts, with lots of writing opportunities;
  • a hands-on history section,  where the student gets to play detective
  • geography studies, including working with and creating maps, and understanding waves and currents
  • cultural studies, including some food fun with a focus on favourites from South Africa
  • a dip into genetics and chromosomes in the science section and a section on weather and weather patterns

The unit can be used in its entirety, which will take around 3-6 months to complete.  Or it can be used as a resource to dip into for the odd activity or area of interest.
